La Casa de la Música Habana on Galiano and Neptuno streets is, without a doubt, a must in Havana City. Cubadisco is a major event which gives great value to Cuban music. It was created with the intention of acknowledging the musical quality of Cuban productions. Like life itself, we should not forget that music is enriched with the diversity and richness of other cultures which are reflected at the same time by their artists and composers. This fair gives you the opportunity to know the Cuban people, to feel the way we are. It is the most important event of the Cuban musical industry. It is a platform to show our main achievements, to watch an exquisite musical program with special presentations of Cuban and foreign artists, to promote the paying of tributes as well as to award national and international prizes to important figures of Cuban and world culture. This edition, its XIV, is scheduled to take place from the 15th to the 23rd of May of 2010 in our capital city. It will be a unique opportunity to get to know our music and to be able to dance and feel our rhythms and traditions.
In the heart of one of the busiest and most popular streets in Cuba, Calle 23 in Vedado, stands a neon sign which announces the La Zorra y el Cuervo Club (Sp. for The Vixen and the Cock Crow), a place which I love visiting and where I can listen to good live music performed by different foreign and Cuban jazz groups. It is a friendly place and is located in La Rampa, one of the areas with the most nightlife in Havana. Cuba is not only a land of dancers but also a land of musicians who play different styles of music. When it comes to jazz, this small club takes a privileged place. Cuban important figures in the world of this select genre like Chucho Valdéz, Bobby Carcasés, Roberto Fonseca, among others, take possession of this space and play their Latin jazz timbres and chords. At this moment in time, anyone who lives in Havana or has the good luck to visit it must not deprive himself of the fortune offered by this cozy place which keeps alive our cultural tradition.
Cuba is a land of dancers ad my family is no exception. That’s why I always enjoy that much all of the events in the city concerning dance, such as the Dance of the Caribbean Biennial, which is coming to the city for the second time to Havana City from the 23rd to the 28th of March.
Dare to taste this exquisite plate whose recipe will captivate you: tamal en hoja, which in Cuba gets a special flavor. Can you imagine that I didn’t know how to make tamales for a long time? Despite the fact that I cook since I was a little girl, there was always something wrong with my tamales (too salty, little water, too much taste of garlic). But I’m very persistent, so after spending too much corn, tomato and pork I discovered almost by accident this simple recipe of tamales in its own leaves.
